Support Worker
SEN Waking Night Carer, Fareham, PO15. Excellent part-time SEN Waking Night role supporting a young client with a brain injury and complex care needs. £18.05 Gross per Hour

Days & Hours: Monday and Tuesday: 10.00pm to 7.30am. 1 day shift every other week typical hours 9.00am to 6.30pm weekday and 9 – 4pm weekends

Accommodation: Teddy has his own area in the center of the family home, including a therapy / education room, bedroom, kitchen and hydrotherapy pool in the garden. All accessible with ceiling track hoists.

About this client/child: Teddy, 16, is at the heart of a loving and supportive family, living independently with the support of his care team whilst his parents provide all care outside of the team’s hours of duty. He is a happy young man with lots of hobbies and interests, including swimming, messy and sensory play, strolls along the local beaches and visits to farms; his team ensures all activities are adapted to Teddy’s needs. Teddy sustained a brain injury secondary to pneumococcal meningitis at 1 year old, as a result he is deaf, blind, quadriplegic and has regular seizures for which at times, emergency medication is administered. Teddy communicates via body language, facial expressions, and sounds; his team are intuitive and attentive to Teddy’s non-verbal communication. You will be able to see Teddy’s personality shine through, once you get to know him. Teddy has a VP shunt in-situ and a PEG (mainly for medication and to top up his fluid) he loves his food, most days he can eat orally, and he will never turn down a chocolate pudding!

Overview of role: Teddy’s care team provide 2:1 support during the day and 1:1 at night with parents on call at all times of day or night. It is important that his waking night care team also supports Teddy during the day, to know Teddy, his routines, and for all team members to work well together. Each shift, day or night, will be dependent on Teddy’s seizure activity, he can be alert and engaging or extremely sleepy and withdrawn; his team manage this very well day to day and make the very most out of the good days with planned activities etc. Teddy generally sleeps very well at night, he has sleep apnea and has an oxygen and heart rate monitor connected throughout the night, raising an alarm if he needs to be repositioned. Some nights you will be by Teddy’s bedside, others you will have a video monitor and can complete some duties such as washing syringes, prepping medication, laundry etc. Teddy has been educated at home from a young age, and receives regular physiotherapy input, his team are trained to meet all his needs (health, medical, therapy, education, social etc). Additional hours available to cover leave etc.
