British summertime is often unpredictable when it comes to the weather. It’s not unheard of to experience rain, sun, wind and even snow all in the same day. That’s why we’ve put together our top summer holiday activities for kids that you can do, no matter the weather.
- Make-it-yourself playdough – Store bought playdough can be both expensive and toxic, especially to younger children. For a safe and quick playdough you can make at home, simply mix cornflour with water until it becomes thick and then pour it out and allow your children to get creative.
- Gardening – If the weather is nice, head outside to do a little gardening. Gardening keeps kids active and healthy whilst helping to build their knowledge of food and plants. If it’s raining you could always start an indoor herb window that will help bring clean air into the house and will taste great in your cooking.
- Put on a play – Dress up, rehearse and put on a play. Get older children to use their imagination and create a script. They could even make sets out of cardboard and paint, stretching this activity out over the course of a few days. Younger children could use finger puppets to act out their favourite story or nursery rhyme.
- Camping with a difference – Set up camp in your bedroom, living room or kitchen. Use sheets to turn bunk-beds or the kitchen table into a tent or you could use a pop up tent for an instant campsite. Fill them with comfy cushions, sheets, or even fairy lights if you’re feeling adventurous, and then settle down for stories and snack-time. Make the experience more authentic by closing the curtains, turning out the lights and using a couple of torches to make scary faces and tell spooky stories.
- Sports day – Children should spend time each day being active and what better way to encourage this than organising a sports day? Set up different activities and challenges for them to compete in and make sure everyone gets a small prize for being involved! You could even get the children to make trophies or medals the day before that can be awarded after the event.
- Scavenger Hunt – If you’re taking a trip to the shops, the park or even just a walk about town, play a game of eye-spy using homemade bingo cards that the children can use to note down the things they find. Give them a list of things to look out for and see how many they can spot.
Enjoy the summer holidays, no matter the weather, with these fun-filled activity ideas.
